A wide and exciting range of gifts, delivered to your door.
Flowers and plants
The site is a general gifts store, but specializes in food. We’ll come to the food options shortly, but let’s first consider the flowers and plants on offer. Well, in short, the bouquet options are a little limited and expensive when compared with some of the site’s competitors. That considered, there are enough attractive and high quality designs to suit most occasions, if not all palettes. Harry and David is affiliated with 1800Flowers.com, though, so you can visit their site to increase the range on offer if you wish, and orders will count towards your rewards points.
Although the basic bouquet range feels somewhat snipped, there are some special flower ranges which you don’t often find elsewhere. For example, you can explore trees and centerpieces, amaryllis and bulbs. There are also several rose pages to consider, although this is a fairly common flower on other sites too. Still, if you’re looking for a plant which isn’t a bouquet, this isn’t a bad place to start.
Indoor and outdoor plants are available through Harry and David. If you’re looking for something for the garden, they provide stone animals filled with plants, or potted aromatics such as heather or lavender. However, we felt that these items were quite expensive, potentially because they’re potted and therefore quite heavy. If you don’t want to travel to a garden center but you have a few extra dollars to spend, perhaps this is a viable alternative.
Another option if you’re a plants fan, is to join the monthly plant club. Through this, you will receive a new plant each month. This means you can spruce up the home or garden with a surprise piece of greenery, and it can also act as a nice gift to remind someone that you’re thinking of them each month. Customer reviews of this service aren’t exactly sparkling, though, so we suggest picking your package carefully.
Other monthly clubs include fruit clubs, dessert clubs, gourmet food clubs, wine clubs and more. These provide a great range of products with some interesting twists, adding a little spice to life by encouraging you (or another recipient) to keep trying new things. Their themes are quite interesting and could suit a range of preferences, particularly the Steakhouse Club, Wine and Cheese Club or Organic Fruits Club.
If you’d like to try the range of foods on offer, you can make a single order rather than joining a club. You should find products to suit most people, whether they’ve a savoury, sweet or alcohol-inclined tooth. Chocolates, sweets, baked products (such as cookies and cakes) or gourmet produce (such as cheese and dried meats) are available from top brands including The Popcorn Factory, Fruit Bouquets and Cheryl’s Cookies.
Costs and services
Whilst we’re very tempted by many of the food and plant products, we were a little less keen on the price tag. Some items seemed expensive for what you receive, whilst others were generously proportioned. We recommend considering the market value of goods and whether or not they need to be delivered to your door, because you may be able to find certain items (particularly small but heavy items) for a better price elsewhere. That said, there are certainly good deals to be found, and the cost of sending someone a beautiful hamper and flowers may be negligible compared to the happiness they could bring.
In terms of the site and customer service, there are a few notable positives. Firstly, we liked the site’s calendar and address book, each designed to remind you of key dates (such as birthdays or anniversaries) and make sure you never forget to send a gift. You can also ask the customer support team for a little help if you’re stuck for ideas or have a particular budget to stick to.
To summarise, HarryAndDavid.com offers some really tempting packages with flowers, plants and gourmet foods on offer. However, it can be a little pricey and customer reviews are mixed. If you only want to order flowers and are on a budget, you may wish to look elsewhere, but if you don’t mind spending a few extra dollars and like the idea of sending bundles of gifts, this site is worth a second look.
